Young Learners & Pony Clubs Find out about Pony Parasite

life of a horse worm

It’s a gory but fascinating subject. If you have horses and ponies you can be pretty sure that there will be worms inside them too that come along for the ride!

These worms are what we call parasites – much smaller animals that live in or on a host species, in this case the horse, and take nutrients at their expense. Low numbers of these worms don’t cause much trouble but if a burden is allowed to get too big this can cause serious illness or even sometimes death.

To prevent this happening it’s really important to test parasite levels regularly and use worming treatments where they’re needed to control their numbers.
