The Controlling ANTiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly (CANTER) initiative, launched to tackle the growing problem of anthelmintic resistance, is coming of age. The group is delighted to share its transition to a new governance model, working with the Responsible Use of Medicines Alliance – Companion Animal and Equine (RUMA CA&E) to ensure its continued impact and sustainability. This milestone was marked at the National Equine Forum on 6th March 2025, two years after the initiative’s launch at the same event in 2023.

Originally established by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), CANTER has made significant strides in coordinating efforts to safeguard the efficacy of worming treatments for the future. With the VMD’s governance role now concluded, CANTER is entering a new phase under the stewardship of RUMA CA&E, which has stepped in to provide governance, financial management, and administrative support.

RUMA CA&E’s values and approach closely align with CANTER’s mission, making them a natural partner to sustain and build upon the group’s achievements. As part of this transition, Julia Shrubb, a Core Steering Group member, has taken on the role of Interim Chair to guide CANTER through this next phase.

Reflecting on the transition, Julia Shrubb commented:

"Thanks to the collaborative spirit and shared commitment of all involved, CANTER has built strong momentum, particularly with the publication of the CANTER Guidelines for sustainable equine parasite control. With the steadfast support of RUMA CA&E, we are confident that this progress will continue. Together, we remain dedicated to advancing responsible practices that address the critical challenge of anthelmintic resistance in equines.”

The RUMA Companion Animal & Equine Alliance (RUMA CA&E) was established in 2020 to define the principles of responsible use of medicines in the companion animal and equine sectors with a view to contributing positively to the One Health agenda. This collaboration covers the responsible use of medicines in dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, exotic animals kept as pets, and equids. The aim is for the UK to lead the way in these sectors through evidence-based and measurable activities that will promote and enhance stewardship.

RUMA CA&E Chair, Gwyn Jones, added:

“We are delighted to be working with and supporting CANTER, an organisation whose values closely align with RUMA CA&E’s mission. CANTER has already achieved so much, and we look forward to collaborating in our mutual efforts to support the profession in the responsible use of veterinary medicines across the CA&E sectors.”

Launched in 2023 following pivotal stakeholder meetings, CANTER brings together experts from across the equestrian sector to promote evidence-based parasite control strategies. With RUMA CA&E’s backing, the initiative is set to continue its essential work, ensuring that sustainable and responsible worming practices remain at the forefront of equine health management.
