Steps to stay ahead of redworm risks
Horse owners are invited to join a free, expert-led webinar on Wednesday, 14th January at 7 pm, exploring two of the most significant and potentially harmful equine parasites: small redworm (cyathostomins) and large redworm (Strongylus spp.).
Titled “All Redworms, Large and Small”, the webinar brings together Professor Jacqui Matthews of Austin Davis Biologics, creator of the small redworm blood test, and Claire Shand of Westgate Labs, the first UK laboratory to offer large redworm culturing directly to horse owners.
Claire Shand said; “We were delighted by the response to our joint autumn webinar. So many horse owners tuned in, asked brilliant questions and showed a real appetite to understand parasite control in more depth. This next session is shaped directly by the questions people raised on the night, especially around detecting small and large redworm. We’re excited to deliver a deeper dive into the tools and tests that can help protect the horses in your care.”
The session will take a scientific but accessible look at:
- How the small redworm blood test works and where it fits in modern parasite control
- When to use the test alongside worm egg counts
- Why the large redworm is back on the radar and how culturing supports detection
- How resistance is influencing treatment guidance
- Real examples from worm egg count data and live polling
Owners will also have the chance to ask questions during the live Q&A.
Anyone who submits a question or tunes in live will be entered into a giveaway to win a Westgate Labs test kit.
The webinar will be streamed live on the event Facebook page
