2025 PLASTICS INDUSTRY AWARDS
23 September 2025
OUR GREEN POTS ARE SHORTLISTED!
We are thrilled to announce that Westgate Labs, in partnership with Adreco Plastics, has been shortlisted for the 2025 Plastics Industry Awards in the Material Innovation category.
Together, we’ve achieved something truly pioneering: replacing single-use plastics with a 100% compostable biomaterial container.
A First in the UK
Working with Adreco Plastics, we developed a rigid, airtight pot made from plant-based material that performs like plastic but is fully compostable. This breakthrough means our worm egg count kits now meet all postal and laboratory requirements while offering a safe and sustainable end-of-life option.
For our customers, it’s as simple as putting the used pots onto the muck heap with the rest of the packaging. The result? A 90% reduction in waste-to-landfill and the final piece of the puzzle in our ambition to deliver 100% sustainable, zero-waste kits.
Why This Matters
This project proves that biomaterials can rival traditional plastics in regulated, performance-critical applications. It demonstrates:
-
Technical expertise – adapting advanced tooling and moulding to work with BioGaer.
-
Creativity – developing a material that looks, feels, and functions like plastic but is completely compostable.
-
Leadership – showing that sustainable solutions can meet industry standards.
-
Impact – real benefits for animal health, the environment, and the wider veterinary sector.
A Shared Commitment
At Westgate Labs, sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do. From reducing chemical use in parasite control to creating a nature reserve on our farm, we are passionate about making a difference for animals, people, and the planet. This innovation is another exciting step forward.
“It looks like plastic, it behaves like plastic, but it’s completely compostable. This is the final piece of the puzzle to making our range of test kits 100% sustainable and zero waste.” – Claire Shand, Marketing Director, Westgate Labs
We are proud to celebrate this achievement and delighted that it has been recognised by the Plastics Industry Awards.
