>> Thinking About Costs...

Economical worming using worm egg counts

Using worm egg counts in your programme leads to better worming for your horse and that remains the most important reason for doing so. You will also be slowing down the development of resistance to wormers. However we know that some people are worried about the costs involved so we thought it useful to take a look at those. The vast majority of customers will save money on their worming costs by introducing a worm count programme.

A Standard Worming Programme
A single horse on a standard worming programme (based on drug manufacturers recommendations).
A Targeted Worming Programme
A single horse, kept in a low risk situation, on a reduced worming programme, using a Westgate Labs 4count pack.

Each year:
2 x Equest Pramox plus 2 x Equest
= £50 - £65 (depending on where purchased)

Total over 3 years = £150 - £195

OR

Each year:
3 x ivermectin (eg Eraqel, Eqvalan) plus 2 x combi wormer (eg Equimax, Eqvalan-duo) plus 5 day Guard = £57 - £80 each year (depending on where purchased)

Total over 3 years = £171 - £240

Year one:
3 x worm counts @ £7.25 each = £21.75 plus one dose of Equest Pramox @ £16-£19 (depending on where purchased)
Total cost: £37.75 - £40.25

Year two as above

Year three:
2 x worm counts@ £7.25 each: plus one dose of Equest Pramox @ £16-£19
Total Cost:
£30.50 - £33.50

(Extra costs involved if the horse needs both counts and worming at the start of the programme, but this will improve as you get on top of any parasite problems, as will your horse’s health.)

Total over 3 years = £151 - £240 Total over 3 years = £106 - £114

These figures are just to give you an idea of how reduced programmes can work and may vary according to individual needs and service used.

The last word from our customers:

‘My horses do not have to take chemicals they don't need and they both have new winter rugs with the money I have saved this year. Your service is efficient, easy to use and takes the headache out of worming. Many thanks’ Kim.

‘Doing the worm count on a regular basis helps me to not only to save money, but also I don't have to pump Chemicals into the animal when it's not needed.’ Nora.

‘It is definitely the cheapest option and means you are not filling your horse with chemicals unnecessarily’ Anne.
